EAU CLAIRE - St. Norbert College won four deuce sets en route to a 2-0 day at the UW-Eau Claire Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament at McPhee Physical Education Center.
The Green Knights picked up a 3-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead College 25-19, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23. St. Norbert then picked up a hard-fought 3-1 win over Eau Claire by scores of 30-28, 20-25, 26-24, 28-26.
St. Norbert never trailed in Set 1 against Concordia, taking an early 7-2 lead and pulling away. After an 8-8 tie in Set 2, the Cobbers went on a 6-1 run to take control. The Green Knights led 13-8 in Set 3 before Concordia battled back to tie it 22-22, but a pair of
Alyssa Mills kills and one from
Rylie Gregg closed out a 2-1 lead. In the decisive fourth set, Concordia led 20-18 before the Green Knights rattled off four-straight points for a 22-20 lead. The set went to a 23-23 tie but kills by Mills and
Brooke Clement closed out the win.
The Green Knights hit .307 with 54 kills against 12 errors and 137 attempts. Clement had 13 kills, while Mills and Gregg added 11 apiece.
Ellie Hartson had 22 assists and three service aces.
Erin Eggers totaled 11 digs.
Against Eau Claire, the first set featured 11 ties and three lead changes - including ties at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28. An Eau Claire service error and kill by Gregg put the Green Knights over the top for a 1-0 lead. The second set was tied at 20-20 before the Blugolds rattled off five straight points to level the match. St. Norbert led 16-7 in Set 3 before Eau Claire charged back, tying the set at 18-18. With late ties at 22, 23 and 24, an Eau Claire hitting error and a
Heidi Colburn service aces gave St. Norbert the set win and a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set had a whopping 23 ties, nearly half of the 47 in the match. St. Norbert led 26-25 and was service for match point before Eau Claire got a kill to get it tied at 26. Two Eau Claire hitting errors closed out the win for the Green Knights.
St. Norbert hit .176, with 58 kills and 27 errors in 176 attempts. Mills, Clement and Gregg all had 14 kills apiece. Hartson had 28 assists and Colburn added 17. Hartson had three aces and Colburn added two. Eggers finished with 22 digs. Colburn and
Linnea Svennes had three blocks each.
Mills and Gregg were named to the All-Tournament Team.
