DE PERE - St. Norbert College got a 47-yard touchdown pass from
Peyton Lyon to
Paul Bageanis with 13 seconds remaining to cap a thrilling 37-32 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Schneider Stadium.
The late touchdown salvaged a win for the Green Knights, who allowed two touchdowns nine seconds apart with less than a minute remaining to see an 11-point lead melt into a one-point deficit. Wisconsin Lutheran scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Barbian to Trevion Green with 52 seconds left to cut the deficit to 31-26. Following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Warriors' onside kick attempt from midfield was successful, recovering at the St. Norbert 38. On the next play, Barbian hit Emmitt Hawkins on a 38-yard touchdown pass for a 32-31 lead with 43 seconds to go.
St. Norbert got the ball on its own 31 following the kickoff and passes from Lyon to
Owen Kudick for 10 yards and to
Austin Miller for 12 yards moved the Green Knights to the Wisconsin Lutheran 47. Following an incompletion, Lyon's picture-perfect strike was hauled in by Bageanis at about the 2-yard line and he then fell into the end zone with the go-ahead points.
Wisconsin Lutheran's only play from scrimmage was stopped after a lateral was not corralled and St. Norbert recovered with 4 seconds left to end the game.
St. Norbert scored late in the first quarter for the game's first points on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Lyon to Bageanis with 2:43 left in the period. The extra-point failed for a 6-0 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran answered quickly with a 45-yard touchdown pass from Barbian to Landon Neeley for a 7-6 lead as the opening quarter came to a close.
The Green Knights answered early in the second quarter when
Delton Zuleger got loose for a 14-yard touchdown with 12:28 to go before halftime for a 12-7 lead. St. Norbert would turn the ball over at its own 39 with just under 2 minutes left in the quarter. Wisconsin Lutheran drove to the St. Norbert 3, but a field-goal attempt was blocked by
Bryan Boockmeier on the last play of the half - a play that would ultimately prove crucial down the stretch.
St. Norbert took an 18-7 lead when Zuleger ran in on a 9-yard scamper with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Wisconsin Lutheran countered with an 8-yard touchdown run by Mike DuPree with 1:24 left for an 18-13 lead at the end of the three quarters.
The Green Knights responded with a 56-yard touchdown pass from Lyon to
Owen Kudick with 13:50 left, but the Warriors went on another extended drive to score on a 12-yrad touchdown from Barbian to Emmitt Hawkinson fourth-and-6 with 9:37 to go. Kudick scored on a 1-yard run with 5:15 left to give St. Norbert a 31-20 lead and set up the game's exciting conclusion.
St. Norbert outgained Wisconsin Lutheran 530-453 in total offense. Kudick rushed 20 times for 170 yards, while Zuleger ran 22 times for 106 yards. Lyon completed 15 of 25 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Miller caught six passes for 26 yards, Kudick three passes for 91 yards and Bageanis three passes for 61 yards.
Barbian completed 34 of 52 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns. Green caught 14 passes for 152 yards, while DuPree rushed 20 times for 95 yards.
Kyle Santos led St. Norbert with 10 tackles, while
Logan Dorner added seven.
Oliver Sgrignuoli had six tackles with three tackles-for-loss and two quarterback sacks.
