St. Norbert Turned Away at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - St. Norbert College advanced to the 2-yard line but was thwarted from its second late comeback in as many weeks in a 21-17 loss to Eureka College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at McKinzie Field.

St. Norbert opened the fourth quarter trailing 14-10 and took advantage of a short field to take a 17-14 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Delton Zuleger with 8:27 remaining. Eureka would return the ensuing kickoff to the St. Norbert 42-yard line and then convert a fourth-down chance to score on an 8-yard touchdown run by Sebastian Hill with 4:50 to go.

The Green Knights would respond with a march to the Eureka 24, but a pass was intercepted in the end zone with 1:55 left. St. Norbert's defense held and forced the Red Devils to punt from their own 25. A 35-yard punt was returned 30 yards by Austin Miller to give St. Norbert possession at the Eureka 30.

Peyton Lyon found Miller for 21 yards on the first play, and Mitch Van Vooren drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone to set up St. Norbert at the 2-yard line with 18 seconds left. But four passes fell incomplete and St. Norbert came away empty after pulling out a 37-32 win in the final seconds one week prior against Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Eureka scored on the game's opening possession on a Ben Bernabei 1-yard touchdown run with 8:33 left in the first quarter. St. Norbert then went three-and-out but Eureka fumbled the punt and St. Norbert recovered at the Red Devils' 28. Lyon then hit Van Vooren for a 28-yard touchdown to knot the score at 7-7 with 6:23 left in the quarter.

The Red Devils scored the only points of the second quarter on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Kaeden Frazier to Austin Swiech with 2:12 left before halftime and a 14-7 lead.

St. Norbert got three points back in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Dalton Moyse.

Eureka outgained St. Norbert 331-319 in total offense. Lyon completed 24 of 38 passes for 257 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Miller caught nine passes for 50 yards, while Van Vooren caught four passes for 64 yards. Zuleger had a team-high 44 rushing yards on eight carries.

Frazier completed 16 of 21 passes for 197 yards and one touchdown, while Bernabei rushed 30 times for 132 yards and one touchdown for Eureka.
