RACINE - St. Norbert College gained perhaps the biggest dual win since the men's tennis program started in the 1937-38 school year when it picked up a critical 6-3 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference dual at Racine Indoor Tennis Club.
The Green Knights (9-6, 5-1 NACC), who have never won a conference championship in men's tennis, handed the Raiders their first conference loss. St. Norbert is now tied for first place atop the NACC with Illinois Institute of Technology and a half-game ahead of MSOE and Wisconsin Lutheran College entering the final week of regular-season play. St. Norbert has just one NACC dual remaining when it hosts winless Marian University on April 16 at Green Bay Tennis Center. A victory over the Sabres would clinch at least a share of the NACC crown and the Green Knights' first-ever league title.
St. Norbert got off to a good start by picked up two wins in doubles play.
David Vandenberg and
Joe Pellechia claimed an 8-3 victory over Alex Nakasato and Josh Fay at No. 2.
Anthony Michels and
Brian Coulter topped Benjamin Steves and Tony Truong 8-3 at No. 3.
The Green Knights picked up four singles wins - all in straight sets - to secure the win.
Brett Daniels defeated Joe Chong 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1.
Adam Stacho bested Alex Nakasato 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Vandenberg gained a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Brandon Kurzynski at No. 5, while Pellechia tripped Truong 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
St. Norbert returns to action on Saturday, April 15, when it heads to Madison to face Edgewood Collgee in a non-conference match.
