SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – St. Norbert College suffered a pair of one-run losses to Dominican University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Wintrust Stadium.
The Green Knights dropped the opener 7-6 in 19 innings, setting NACC and St. Norbert records for longest game by innings. St. Norbert then yielded four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose the nightcap 8-7.
St. Norbert trailed 5-4 going to the ninth inning of the opener until
Sebastien Dubois unleashed a long two-run home run to put the Green Knights ahead 6-5. The Stars would rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run and having the bases loaded with nobody out but couldn't push across the game-winning run.
The game would then proceed to go scoreless for the next nine innings. The Green Knights would leave two runners on in the 10th inning and the bases loaded in the 16th. Dominican left the bases loaded in the 10th and two on in the 13th. Dominican would score the winning run on an error with two outs in the bottom of the 19th.
St. Norbert had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Dubois RBI single. The Stars got a run in the second, but the Green Knights got the run back with another run-scoring single from Dubois in the third. St. Norbert took a 4-1 lead when
Trevor Reinhardt had an RBI single and
Caden Uhlenbrauck followed with an RBI single. Dominican scored once in the fifth and then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
Several new school records were set in the game. Dubois finished 6-for-8 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, becoming the first player in school history to record a six-hit game. Uhlenbrauck was 3-for-9, and along with
Trevor Reinhardt set a St. Norbert game record with nine at bats in a game.
Devin Geary was 2-for-8 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. The Green Knights had 74 official at bats, well ahead of the previous mark of 51.
Jace Midbon started and worked seven innings, allowing nine hits and two earned runs with one walk and six strikeouts.
Noah Lindsley turned in an impressive 10-inning relief appearance, the longest relief outing in St. Norbert history. Lindsley yielded six hits with no earned runs, walking four and striking out 11.
Grant Maus was charged with the loss, allowing an unearned run in the 19th inning. St. Norbert's pitching staff recorded 18 strikeouts, the second-most in a game in school history.
In the nightcap, the Green Knights scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Geary scored on a wild pitch, Uhlenbrauck walked with the bases loaded to force in a run and
Tommy Sheehan drove in a run with a single. The Stars responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 3-3.
St. Norbert scored three runs in the top of the sixth, with
Ben Boda and
Peyton Just both scoring on an error. Reinhardt followed with an RBI single. Dominican would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth. The Green Knights tacked on a run in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI single by
Sam O'Leary. The Stars then fashioned four runs on four hits and one St. Norbert error in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.
Sheehan was 3-for-5, while Reinhardt was 2-for-4.
Jason Schroeder started and went seven innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Cole Bzdawka took the loss in relief.
