Green Knights Salvage Split In Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - St. Norbert College battled back to gain a split of two games on its third day of games in Florida, falling 12-7 to Cornell College and a 7-4 win over Augsburg University.

St. Norbert, now 5-1 on the season, is off to its best start since the 2000 season when it also won five of its first six games.

The Green Knights fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning of the nightcap but rallied with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Allison Ardito had an RBI groundout and another run scored on a Christina Paleka single. St. Norbert added a run in the second inning for a 4-1 lead on an Ardito RBI single.

The Auggies (9-3) would get two runs in the top of the third to cut their deficit to 4-3. The score would remain that way until St. Norbert scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Paleka and Zoe Zasada had RBI singles, while Makenna DeValk had an RBI groundout to push the lead to 7-4. Augsburg would get one run in the sixth to close out the scoring.

Paleka was 2-for-3, while Ardito and Lilly Haase were both 2-for-4. The Green Knights turned three double plays defensively. Elizabeth Stuebs earned the win with four relief innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs with one strikeout.

Against Cornell, St. Norbert took a 5-0 lead with three first-inning runs and two more in the second. Haase had a two-run single and Paleka an RBI groundout. Nicole Condon and Ava Engwall had grounders to bring home runs in the second inning. The Rams would score four runs on four hits and two St. Norbert errors in the third to get to 5-4.

The Green Knights scored singles runs in the fourth and fifth, scoring on a Paige Diercks RBI double and an Engwall sacrifice fly. Cornell would take control in the bottom of the sixth, getting seven consecutive hits to start the inning. The Rams scored eight runs on nine hits in the inning and get the win.

Ardito and Grace Engwall were both 2-for-4. Addison Race took the loss, allowing five runs in 2 2/3 relief innings.
