AUBURNDALE, Fla. – St. Norbert College used a record-setting inning to salvage a split of a doubleheader with Curry College as it opened its Florida spring-break trip.
The Green Knights lost the opener 9-5 before matching a school record with a 15-run inning in a 26-1 win in the nightcap.
St. Norbert came out red hot in the nightcap with 15 runs in the top of the first inning to take early control, tying the school record set almost 10 years ago to the day against Albion College on March 16, 2013. The 26-run output also tied a St. Norbert record for runs in a game, matching the standard set against Carroll University on April 6, 2013. The 25-run margin of victory topped the previous school record of 22 runs set in a 24-2 win over Lawrence University on April 28, 2012.
Trevor Reinhardt got the scoring started with a two-run single, and
Tommy Sheehan followed with a two-run single of his own.
Devin Geary forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk and
Huck Sprong then scored on a wild pitch.
Grady Brick brought home a run on a grounder and
Caden Uhlenbrauck then plated a run with a single.
Will DeBruin then had a two-run single, followed by bases-loaded walks by Sprong and
Ben Boda. Geary added a two-run single and Boda scored on a wild pitch to finally put an end to the barrage. The Green Knights added a run in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by Sheehan.
The Green Knights turned a rout into a massacre with a nine-run sixth.
Trevor Cornell stroked a three-run home run to open the inning. DeBruin scored on an error, Geary forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk,
Tommy Alston drove in two runs with a double,
Nathan Rodriguez plated a run on a grounder and Cornell brought home another run with a single. Sean O'Leary's RBI single in the seventh closed out the Green Knights' scoring. Curry scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jace Midbon picked up a complete-game win for the Green Knights, striking out 12 while allowing just two hits and two walks. Sheehan was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI, while Cornell was 2-for-2 with four RBI. Eleven other players had one hit each, while Boda scored three runs.
In the opener, Curry got two runs in the top of the first before the Green Knights got a run back in the second inning on a solo home run from
Sebastien Dubois. The Colonels responded with three runs in the third and three more in the fourth for an 8-1 lead.
St. Norbert scored one in the fourth on an RBI double from Dubois. Curry would get one run in the fifth before the Green Knights scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. DeBruin forced in a run on a bases-loaded walk,
Tyler Pigeon brought home a run with an RBI grounder and Uhlenbrauck drove in a run with a single.
Dubois was 2-for-3, while Uhlenbrauck was 2-for-3.
Noah Lindsley took the loss, working three-plus innings for the Green Knights.
