St. Norbert Wins Five-Set Thriller At Edgewood

MADISON - St. Norbert College picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Green Knights (4-8, 1-0 NACC) outlasted the Eagles 15-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-27, 15-12 to win their conference opener.

Edgewood took control of Set 1 early with an 8-0 lead and went on to take a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights trailed 10-8 in Set 2 before going on an 13-4 run to take a 21-14 lead. Kaden Kornaus had a pair of kills and two service aces during the run. A kill from Jake Bettag closed out the set win and square the match 1-1.

St. Norbert held an 11-9 lead in Set 3 before going on a 11-5 run to pull away for a 22-14 lead, with Owen Knezevich getting four kills during the stretch. Another Knezevich kill put St. Norbert ahead 2-1 in the match. The Green Knights led 19-16 in Set 4 before the Eagles went on a 5-2 lead to tie the set at 21-21. The teams trades points until Edgewood scored the final two points after a 25-25 tie.

A tense Set 5 featured eight ties, the final one at 8-8. St. Norbert then scored off Edgewood service and attack errors for a 10-8 lead. Knezevich's kill put St. Norbert up 12-10, and Edgewood followed with two attack errors for a 14-10 lead. The Eagles scored the next two points but a Michael Whitney kill sealed the match win.

St. Norbert hit .248 for the match, with 52 kills against 20 errors in 129 attempts. Kornaus had 14 kills, while Bettag and Knezevich had 11 apiece. Jake Krueger also had nine kills. Whitney totaled 23 assists and Eddie Pacula added 18. Kornaus, Whitney and Kade Nelson all had two service aces each.

Krueger had nine digs, with Kornaus, Knezevich and Ryan Conway all with eight each. Bettag, Nelson and Krueger all had three blocks apiece.

Edgewood hit .250, with 60 kills against 25 errors in 140 attempts. Ryder Hill-Zastrow led the Eagles with 18 kills.
