AURORA, Ill. - St. Norbert College got a late 3-pointer in regular to force overtime, but the Green Knights went cold in the game's final five minutes to drop an 88-81 overtime decision in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Thornton Gymnasium.
Casey Jepson's 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining knotted the score at 78-78 and forced overtime. But the Green Knights would then go just 1-for-8 from the floor in the extra session as the Spartans pulled away for the win.
St. Norbert trailed 10-6 in the early going before going on a 8-0 run to take an 18-10 lead late in the first quarter on a
Kalina Winslow 3-pointer before settling on an 18-13 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes. Neither team led by more than a possession in the second quarter until Aurora erased a 30-27 deficit with 1:50 left in the period by going on a 9-2 run late to take a 36-32 edge at halftime.
The Green Knights had a red-hot third quarter, scoring 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the floor and making all four of their three-point field-goal attempts. A Jepson trey put the Green Knights ahead 45-40 with 5:39 left in the quarter, and
Marnie Kahl's layup with 5 seconds left was good for a 58-54 lead at the final quarter break.
St. Norbert would hold its last lead after an
Emma Morrisey 3-pointer for a 61-60 edge with 7:36 left. The Green Knights would get tied twice after, the latter at 71-71 with 2:01 left, and would then force overtime on the ninth tie of the game on Jepson's triple.
The Green Knights would miss their first seven shots in overtime while also committing two turnovers. Aurora had just a three-point lead until a Gabrielle Wolff basket with 1:56 left for an 83-78 advantage.
St. Norbert made 32 of 73 (43.8 percent) of its field-goal attempts and was 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Green Knights also held a 42-30 rebounding advantage. Jepson had a team-high 17 points and six assists, while
Taylor Thiry added 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Winslo had 14 points off the bench, while Morrisey added 10 points and six assists.
Aurora shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the floor but was 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) from distance and was a crucial 22-for-25 (88 percent) at the free-throw line. Wolff led the Spartans with 33 points, while Macy Kocen added 17 points.
