KENOSHA - St. Norbert College suffered through a frigid second quarter from the floor and dropped a 60-50 non-conference decision to Carthage College at Tarble Arena.
The Green Knights converted on just 1 of 15 field-goal attempts in the second quarter, getting outscored 16-2 in the period.
St. Norbert built a pair of four-point leads early, leading 7-3 and 9-5. The Firebirds answered with a 10-0 run to take a 15-9 lead, but the Green Knights got the last three points of the quarter on a
Macey Mercer basket and a
Chloe Gruszynski free throw.
The Green Knights trailed 17-14 after an
Emma Morrisey layup with 7:49 left in the second quarter, but St. Norbert went stone cold the rest of the period as Carthage went on a 14-0 run to take a 31-14 halftime lead.
St. Norbert eventually fell behind by 19 points twice, the latter at 37-18 with 7:35 left in the third quarter, before charging back. The Green Knights went on a 14-1 run the rest of the quarter paced by a pair of
Kalina Winslow 3-pointers and a conventional three-point play by Morrisey to trail 38-32 at the final quarter break.
Winslow opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to bring St. Norbert within 38-34, but Carthage responded with a 6-0 run to boost its lead to 44-34 with 8:59 left. The Green Knights would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
St. Norbert shot 29.8 percent (17-for-57) from the floor and was 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Winslow led the Green Knights with 15 points off the bench, while
Taylor Thiry added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Carthage shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the floor. Marianna Morrissey did the heavy lifting for the Firebirds, totaling 32 points and eight rebounds.
