SUPERIOR - St. Norbert College turned in a solid defensive effort and went on to post a 61-46 win over UW-Superior in its second game of the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Green Knights held the Yellowjackets to 25.5 percent shooting from the floor, with Superior making just 13 of 51 field-goal attempts. St. Norbert shot 49 percent from the floor, canning 24 of 49 shots.
St. Norbert led virtually start to finish, trailing only at 2-0. The Green Knights went on a 12-4 run late in the first quarter to build an 18-9 lead.
Marnie Kahl and
Emma Morrisey got the run started with a hoop and 3-pointer, respectively. A Morrisey layup put the Green Knights up 18-9 with 2:24 left in the period. St. Norbert led 20-13 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, with the Green Knights holding a 9-6 scoring edge. St. Norbert held Superior to 1-for-11 (9.1 percent) from the floor in the quarter as it held a 29-19 halftime lead.
Superior got to within 33-27 with 5:40 left in the third quarter, but St. Norbert got a hoop from
Taylor Thiry and a conventional three-point play from
Chloe Gruszynski for a 38-27 lead at the 2:13 mark. The Green Knights settled on a 42-32 lead at the final quarter break.
St. Norbert led 47-39 with 6:29 remaining and then salted away the win with a 12-1 run to lead 59-40 with 1:48 left.
Thiry led the Green Knights with 14 points, while Morrisey had 12 points. Gruszynski chipped in with eight points and
Rose Hahn finished with seven points.
Elise Besonen led Superior with 13 points, while MyKenzie Leccia added 12 points.
