Late Rally Not Enough For Green Knights

SUPERIOR - St. Norbert College mounted a late rally but ran out of time in a 74-71 loss to UW-La Crosse at the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic at UW-Superior's Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The Green Knights trailed 62-59 with 5:51 remaining before the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take a 69-59 lead with 3:17 to go. St. Norbert would counter with a 7-0 run of its own, getting a jumper from Taylor Thiry, a 3-pointer from Emma Morrisey and a layup from Thiry to get to within 69-66 with 1:33 left. The Green Knights got a defensive stop and had two field-goal attempts go awry with 43 seconds left. St. Norbert played defense and forced a La Crosse miss with 13 seconds left, but the Eagles corralled the rebound and Lauren Milne's putback gave them a 71-66 lead.

St. Norbert got off to a good start, taking a 10-4 lead with 3:11 left in the first quarter. La Crosse got three free throws to get to within 10-7 after 10 minutes. The Green Knights rebuilt a lead to 17-9 with 8:04 left in the second quarter, but La Crosse went on an 11-2 run to take a 20-19 lead at the 5:11 mark. The game was tied five times the rest of the quarter, with La Crosse taking a 32-29 halftime lead.

La Crosse took a 55-43 lead with 2:07 left in the third quarter before a pair of Kalina Winslow 3-pointers halved the deficit. The Eagles led 57-50 after three quarters.

St. Norbert shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) from the floor and held a 42-21 rebounding advantage. Thiry led the Green Knights with 20 points, while Morrisey added 14 points and Winslow 13 points.

La Crosse shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the floor but was 21-for-27 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line and committed just six turnovers. Kailee Meeker had a game-high 21 points, while Milne added 15 points and Grace Knupp 11 points.
