EAU CLAIRE - St. Norbert College had to settle for a split of a home-and-home non-conference series with UW-Eau Claire after dropping a 5-3 decision at Hobbs Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (7-4), who won the opener 2-0 at home on Friday, fell behind 2-0 after the first period. No. 7-ranked Eau Claire got a pair of goals from Tyler Herzberg at 10:30 and Trenten Heyde at 14:19.
St. Norbert cut into its deficit when
Adam Stacho potted his eighth goal of the season at 2:57 of the second period. The Blugolds would respond later in the third period when Connor Szmul scored a power-play goal at 14:32 and Ben Monson followed at 17:21 for a 4-1 lead.
Calvin Hanson quickly got a goal back at 17:49 to get the Green Knights within 4-2 after two periods.
Eau Claire took a 5-2 lead on a Kyler Grundy goal at 5:21 of the third period.
Brock Baker scored at 9:58 to get the Green Knights to within 5-3. The Green Knights would get no closer, including 75 seconds of extra-attacker time which had 69 seconds of power-play time.
St. Norbert finished 0-for-7 on the power play, while Eau Claire was 1-for-5. The Green Knights outshot Eau Claire 29-24.
Hunter Garvey made 19 stops for the Green Knights, while Max Gutjahr had 26 saves for the Blugolds.
