DE PERE - St. Norbert College's special teams came through on both ends of the ice as the Green Knights topped nationally ranked UW-Eau Claire 2-0 in a non-conference game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (7-3), winners of six of their last seven games, went 2-for-6 on the power play. St. Norbert also killed off all six of the power-play attempts for the Blugolds (5-2-1), who are ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll.
Following a first period with no goals and no penalties, the Green Knights had to go to work on the penalty kill early in the second period. St. Norbert went a man short just 44 seconds into the frame, but killed off that penalty as well as infractions at 5:17 and 8:50. The Green Knights then had a power play starting at 11:49, and St. Norbert converted just six seconds later when
Dayton Deics' shot from the blue line went through a screened Eau Claire goaltender Max Gutjahr for a 1-0 lead. The Green Knights would get another power-play chance at 15:18 but came up empty for a 1-0 lead at second intermission.
St. Norbert had to battle to hold on to its lead when it took penalties at 1:07 and 2:51 of the third period, but the Green Knights killed off both penalties. Eau Claire then took three penalties, the first at 7:40. The Blugolds then committed infractions at 10:44 and 11:46 to give St. Norbert a 5-on-3 chance, which it promptly converted when
Liam Fraser took a pass in the slot and finished into an open net at 11:46.
Each team took a penalty in the last 2:01 of the game and Eau Claire had 1 minute 44 seconds of extra-attacker time, but couldn't crack the scoring column.
Logan Dombrowsky assisted on both goals for the Green Knights' lone multi-point game.
Hunter Garvey picked up his second shutout of the young season by making 28 saves for the Green Knights. Gutjahr made 26 saves for Eau Claire.
The second game of the home-and-home series will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire.
