MEQUON – St. Norbert College pulled out an old-fashioned defensive duel, battling to a 13-7 overtime win over Concordia University Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Tomasini Stadium.
St. Norbert (5-3, 4-2 NACC) handed Concordia (5-2, 4-1) its first conference loss with the win.
Concordia opened overtime and the St. Norbert defense forced the Falcons backward, with
Daylan Lujan picking up a big sack of Michael Purkey on third down. The Falcons' fourth-down pass was incomplete. St. Norbert then converted a third-and-1 on its overtime series when
Delton Zuleger rushed 15 yards to the Concordia 1. A false start penalty backed St. Norbert up to the 6, but on third-and-goal at the 1 quarterback
Peyton Lyon's sneak was just over the goal line for the game-winning points.
The Falcons scored midway through the first quarter when Purkey's run from a yard out gave the host a 7-0 lead with 8:01 left in the period.
St. Norbert flipped the field in the second quarter and was able to get good field position, going 45 yards in 10 plays to tie the game. Zuleger converted a fourth-and-1 at the Concordia 21 to extend the drive, and followed on the next play with a 17-yard run to the Falcons' 2. Zuleger then plunged over from the 1 two plays later to knot the score with 9:18 left in the second quarter.
Both teams had long possessions in the third quarter, with St. Norbert missing a 38-yard field goal try late in the period after having a first-and-goal situation. The Falcons then missed a 27-yard field-goal attempt early in the fourth quarter. St. Norbert lost a fumble at its own 12-yard line on the ensuing possession, but the Green Knights' defense stiffened and
Alex Campbell corralled an interception on third down to again turn away Concordia.
Neither team had a scoring chance the rest of regulation, but Concordia pinned St. Norbert at its own 1 with 1:28 left. The Green Knights were able to get off the goal line and reach overtime.
Concordia outgained St. Norbert 216-208 in total offense. Zuleger led the Green Knights offensively, rushing 27 times for 124 yards and a touchdown. Lyon completed 10 of 19 passes for 64 yards, while
Mitch Van Vooren caught two passes for 24 yards.
Purkey completed 10 of 19 passes for 100 yards to lead the Falcons. Ashar Thomas had a team-high 51 yards on 14 carries.
Sam Barnett had a team-high 13 tackles, while
Kyle Santos added 11. Lujan had three tackles-for-loss and two quarterback sacks among his five total tackles.
John Boeke and
Justin Benoit added quarterback sacks. The Green Knights had 11 tackles-for-loss overall.
