Green Knights Ground Eagles In Rout

DE PERE - St. Norbert College put together a dominant middle two quarters en route to a 71-39 win over Benedictine University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (16-3, 12-0 NACC) held Benedictine without a field goal in the second quarter to take a 22-14 lead after 10 minutes to a 41-16 halftime advantage. St. Norbert outscored the Eagles 20-7 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Benedictine would make five of its first seven field-goal attempts to take an 11-10 lead with 5:07 left in the first quarter, but the Eagles would go 1-for-15 from the field the rest of the first half. Emma Morrisey's 3-pointer put St. Norbert ahead 13-11 and would jumpstart a 12-0 run for the Green Knights. Taylor Thiry converted a layup and then later hit a 3-pointer. Kaycee Gierczak's trey put the Green Knights ahead 22-11 with 1:24 left in the first quarter. St. Norbert led 22-14 at the first quarter break.

The Green Knights led 24-16 with 6:05 left in the second quarter after a pair of Benedictine free throws, but things escalated quickly as the host went on a 17-0 run to close the half. Chloe Gruszynski started the run with a pair of hoops, followed by a jumper from Olivia DeCleene and two layups from Gierczak. DeCleene then buried a 3, followed by fast break layups form Gierczak and DeCleene for a 41-16 halftime lead.

St. Norbert, which led 61-23 after the third quarter, saw its lead swell to 40 points on two occasions in the fourth quarter.

The Green Knights shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the floor and were 9-for-19 (47.4 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Gierczak had 19 points, while Morrisey added 14 points and Gruszynski 13 points. DeCleene had another virtuoso outing running the point, posting seven points, eight rebounds, eight assists with four assists in 27 minutes.

Benedictine shot 30.2 percent (16-for-53) from the floor. Makenzie Carroll and Claire Levendoski led the Eagles with eight points apiece.
