RIVER FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader for the second consecutive day, winning 11-1 and dropping a 5-3 decision against Concordia University Chicago at CUC Field.
St. Norbert wasted little time taking control of the opener, scoring twice in the top of the first inning.
Eric Kramer reached on an error and then scored when
Adam Cootway reached on an error. Luke Follman's fielder's choice then brought around Cootway. The Green Knights added three runs in the second inning on a Cootway sacrifice fly and a two-run home run from
Sebastien Dubois for a 5-0 lead.
St. Norbert scored three more times in the top of the third inning, with
Nick Volz lofting a sacrifice fly and Cootway rifling a two-run double to push ahead 8-0. The Green Knights added a run in the fifth inning on a
Luke Follmann single to bring home Dubois. The Cougars got their only run in the fifth inning on a Tyler Krater solo home run. St. Norbert would get two more runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of Concordia errors and go on to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Trevor Reinhardt went the distance on the mound for the complete-game win, allowing five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Dubois went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.
Isaac Gerhardt was 2-for-4, while Follmann and
Caden Uhlenbrauck were both 2-for-5. Cootway drove in three runs, while Kramer scored three runs.
In the nightcap, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added a run in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. St. Norbert broke through with a run in the seventh inning, when Reinhardt doubled to drive in Gerhardt. The Green Knights tied the game with two runs in the eighth inning on an Uhlenbrauck single. Concordia Chicago would pull ahead in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Garry Maynard.
St. Norbert finished with six hits, with Reinhardt's double the only extra-base safety.
Sam O'Leary took the loss in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
