DE PERE - St. Norbert College bounced back on its second straight day on the diamond with a key doubleheader sweep of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe Concordia University Wisconsin by scores of 9-6 and 12-9 at Van Alstine Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
The Green Knights got back to .500 overall at 12-12 and more importantly moved into fourth place in the NACC standings at 9-5.
St. Norbert used three home runs to power its way to the win in the opener. After Concordia's Sam Beers homered in the first,
Sebastien Dubois countered with a solo shot of his own in the second. The Green Knights then scored four runs in the fourth inning behind a pair of two-run home runs by
Luke Follmann and
Keagan McCarthy. St. Norbert added an insurance run in the sixth when
Caden Uhlenbrauck scored on a wild pitch to lead 6-1.
Concordia answered with a four-run seventh, with the Falcons getting to within 6-5 before leaving the bases loaded. St. Norbert got some breathing room with a three-run eighth inning, with
Eric Kramer forcing home a run with a bases-loaded walk and
Nick Volz rifling a two-run single up the middle. Concordia would get a run home in the top of the ninth but would get no closer.
St. Norbert had nine hits, with Follmann going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Uhlenbrauck was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Dubois also scored a pair of runs.
Mason Sefcik picked up the win, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing one run on five hits.
Sam O'Leary worked the last 2 2/3 innings to nail down the save.
In the nightcap, Concordia got the early jump in the second inning on a solo home run by Tristan Largent. The Green Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, with Kramer plating Follmann on a sacrifice fly, Volz doubling in Uhlenbrauck and
Isaac Gerhardt singling in Volz. The Falcons got a single run in the fourth but Kramer got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run.
Concordia would get to within 4-3 with a run in the fifth inning, but Uhlenbrauck hit a booming home run to left field in the bottom half for a 7-3 lead. St. Norbert pushed ahead 10-3 in the sixth after a two-run double by Follmann and a RBI single by McCarthy. The Falcons would get a two-run home run from Beers in the seventh, but the Green Knights got the runs back in the bottom of the inning a run-scoring groundout by
Trevor Reinhardt and another run scoring on a throwing error on the play. Beers then cranked a three-run home run in the eighth to get Concordia to within 12-8. The Falcons had the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning after scoring a run, but Volz and Uhlenbrauck teamed up to turn a slick double play to end the game.
Follmann was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Volz was 3-for-5 with two doubles. Uhlenbrauck was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while Gerhardt was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. McCarthy was 2-for-4.
Aiden Trusky got the win, allowing seven hits and three runs in five innings pitched.
