Green Knights Survive Wild Third Period to Advance

DE PERE - St. Norbert College allowed five third-period goals but scored four of its own to top Marian University 8-6 in the second game of a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs Quarterfinal Series at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (22-5), who topped Marian 6-1 in Friday's series opener, advance to host Aurora University in a NCHA Semifinal Game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Cornerstone Community Center. Marian, the defending Harris Cup Champion, saw its season end 10-14-3.

St. Norbert carried a 4-1 lead into the third period before things got hectic in the final 20 minutes. Marian pulled to within two goals on a Blake Kleiner goal at 3:39. St. Norbert answered on a Liam Fraser power-play goal at 6:28 for a 5-2 lead, but Marian scored just 18 seconds later when Anthony Bilka cut the deficit to 5-3. The Sabres then scored a power-play goal at 9:54 off the stick of Nick Cherkowski to get to within 5-4. Peter Bates scored on a breakaway at 10:49 to give St. Norbert a 6-4 lead, but Marian responded with a shorthanded goal by Troy Ring at 11:55. Fraser scored again - his 22nd goal of the season - on the same power play for a 7-5 lead at 13:15. Marian would score shorthanded again, this time Ty Mosimann scoring at 13:55. St. Norbert would finally salt the game away on a Peyton Frantti empty-net goal at 19:38.

The Green Knights had taken a 2-0 lead after one period on a pair of Michael McChesney goals at 7:12 and 8:37. St. Norbert took a 3-0 lead on a Bates shorthanded goal at 7:21 of the second period, but Mason Richey scored a power-play goal for Marian at 8:10. St. Norbert pushed ahead 4-1 on Brock Baker's goal 27 seconds later.

Bates finished with two goals and two assists for four points, now giving him 27 goals and 28 assists for 55 points this season - now the second-most in a season ever at St. Norbert behind Rob Smillie's 61 in 1997-98. Fraser also had two goals and two assists, giving him 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points. Fraser's 22 goals is a St. Norbert freshman record, surpassing Andy Cote's 21 set in 2003-04.

Baker had one goals and two assists for three points. McChesney had two goals for two points, while Frantti had one goal and one assist for two points. Jordan Strand had two assists for two points.

St. Norbert outshot Marian 44-34. Colby Entz made 28 saves for St. Norbert, while Colby Muise made 36 saves for Marian.

The Green Knights were 3-for-6 on the power play, while the Sabres were 2-for-5.
