Mark's Overtime Game-Winning Goal Sends St. Norbert to NCHA Final

DE PERE - St. Norbert College junior defenseman Brendan Mark's goal at 19:22 of overtime lifted the Green Knights to a 5-4 win over Aurora University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs semifinal game at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (23-5) advance to the NCHA Harris Cup Championship game at 7 p.m. EST Saturday, March 5 at Adrian College.

Mark took a pass from Peyton Frantti up the near wall and unleashed a heavy slapshot that tucked just under the crossbar and sent Aurora goaltender Josh Boyko's water bottle pinwheeling into the air to set off a wild celebration behind the Spartans' cage with just 37.2 seconds left in the overtime period.

Mark's goal, his fifth of the season, salvaged a victory in a game that saw a 3-0 first-period lead mostly disappear in the second period.

Adam Stacho got St. Norbert started with a rebound goal at 1:30 of the first period. Ben Schmidling then converted a 5-on-3 power-play chance at 10:27 for a 2-0 lead. Michael McChesney then finished off a shorthanded goal with a snipe at 11:30 for a 3-0 St. Norbert lead that would carry into first intermission.

Aurora (18-9-1) wasted little time in responding in the second period. Larry Jungwirth scored at 4:42 of the period and Matt Weber scored just 30 seconds later to quickly cut the deficit down to 3-2. St. Norbert pushed back ahead 4-2 just 48 seconds after that, with Stacho scoring his second goal of the game and his 10th of the season at 6:00. Adam Keyes then scored a power-play goal for Aurora at 12:07 of the second period to cut the lead back to one goal.

St. Norbert held a 4-3 lead through much of the third period until Riley Doyon scored at 14:16 of the third period. The Green Knights had to kill off a too many men penalty at 14:57 and then had a power-play chance carry into overtime, but did not score.

Besides Stacho's two goals, McChesney and Mark also had assists for two-point games. Carter Hottmann also had a two-assist game.

Shots were even at 43-43. Colby Entz made 39 saves for the Green Knights, including 16 in the third period. Boyko turned away 38 shots for the Spartans.

St. Norbert was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Aurora was 1-for-4.
