Green Knights Open Playoffs With Win

DE PERE - St. Norbert College got its postseason off to a good start with a 6-1 win over Marian University in Game 1 of a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs Quarterfinal Series at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (21-5) will face the Sabres (10-13-3) in Game 2 at 7 p.m. Saturday. St. Norbert needs just a tie to advance to the NCHA Semifinals, while Marian needs a win to force a tie-breaking mini-game. St. Norbert extended its winning streak in the quarterfinal round of the NCHA Playoffs to 39 games with the win over Marian, and is 39-1-1 all-time in the quarterfinal round.

St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead after one period after Adam Stacho scored a power-play goal at 18:45 for his eighth goal of the season.

Marian scored a power-play goal of its own just 32 seconds into the second period when Jordan Simoneau scored. The Green Knights would pull ahead at 9:56 when Peyton Frantti scored for the 15th time this season. Michael McChesney added a marker at 16:54 for his eighth of the year and a 3-1 lead heading into second intermission.

Liam Fraser rang up a power-play goal 51 seconds into the third period. Peter Bates scored at 6:47 for his 25th goal of the year, while Fraser scored again at 12:55 for his 20th of the season.

Fraser finished with two assists for a four-point game, while Bates and Frantti had two assists each for three-point games. Jordon Halverson and Jordan Strand each had two assists.

Bates' 25 goals this season is the second most in a season in St. Norbert history, trailing only Rob Smillie's 34 goals in 1997-98. He is only the third player in school history to reach 50 points in a season, joining Smillie's 61-point season in 1997-98 and 51-point season in 1998-99, and Jason Deitsch's 53 points in 2003-04.

Fraser is just the second freshman in St. Norbert history to score at least 20 goals in a season, one shy of Andy Cote's 21 in 2003-04. Fraser's 41 points also surpassed Cote's 39 points for the St. Norbert freshman scoring record.

St. Norbert outshot Marian 43-19. Colby Entz made 18 saves for the Green Knights, while Colby Muise made 32 saves and Aaron Brunn five stops for the Sabres.

The Green Knights were 2-for-4 on the power play, while the Sabres were 1-for-8.
