DE PERE - St. Norbert College struggled shooting from the floor down the stretch and suffered a 68-64 loss to Marian University in a key early-season Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (4-3, 3-1 NACC) led 55-48 with 7:28 left on
Connor Beauchamp's elbow jumper, but was just 1-for-8 from the floor the rest of the way. St. Norbert scored four points on its final 10 possessions of the game.
Garrett Grzesk's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:44 to go snapped a 61-61 tie and put the Green Knights ahead 64-61. Marian responded on a David Britton jumper with 1:09 left. The Green Knights came up empty on their next trip down the floor and Britton canned a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to put the Sabres up 66-64. St. Norbert missed two shots in the closing seconds and Marian closed out the win with a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left.
St. Norbert fell behind 11-2 out of the gate and trailed 22-11 with 9:45 left in the first half. The Sabres still held a 26-15 lead with 6:25 to go in the half before St. Norbert went on a 16-4 run to close out the half, taking a 31-30 lead on a
Carter Gebler runner just before the break.
The Green Knights led 41-34 with 15:58 left and held a 53-45 advantage with 9:04 to go before Marian rallied.
St. Norbert shot 22-for-56 (39.3 percent) from the floor for the game and held a commanding 39-25 rebounding advantage.
Kyle Krueger had 13 points, while Grzesk had 12 and
Michael Payant finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Marian shot 23-for-46 (50.0 percent) from the floor and was 15-for-26 (57.7 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Britton had 29 points to lead the Sabres.
