ROCKFORD, Ill. - St. Norbert College rallied in the second half to outlast Rockford University 69-62 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Seaver Gym.
The Green Knights (5-3, 4-1 NACC) trailed Rockford (4-5, 1-3) by a 32-30 count at halftime. St. Norbert led by as many as 13 points in the second half before holding off a late Regents rally.
Rockford got out to a hot start, taking a 17-8 lead just over 7 minutes into the game. The Regents still led 24-17 with 6:29 left in the half before the Green Knights eventually got to within one points twice before settling on a 32-30 deficit at the break.
Aidan Harrington hit a 3-pointer on St. Norbert's first possession of the second half to give it its first lead since the early going. Rockford would built its lead back to five points at 43-38 with 15:49 remaining, and St. Norbert would not retake the lead until
Jamison Nickolai's basket with 10:17 to go for a 48-46 lead. The Green Knights would get two baskets from
Kyle Krueger and a Nickolai free throw to key a 9-0 run that gave St. Norbert a 53-46 lead with 7:19 left.
Rockford would get to within 55-52 with 5:45 left, but the Green Knights would go on a 11-1 run over the next 4:32 to take a 66-53 lead with 1:13 to go. Krueger had five points and
Michael Payant the other six during the scoring spurt. The Regents would cut it to 66-61 with 13 seconds with a quick 8-0 run but would get no closer.
St. Norbert shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the floor. Krueger had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Nickolai and Payant added 11 points apiece.
Rockford shot 30 percent (18-for-6) from the floor and hoisted 41 three-point field-goal attempts, making 13 for a 31.7 percent accuracy. Charles Burnell led th Regents with 15 points.
