DE PERE - St. Norbert College had an efficient offensive performance and topped UW-Superior 82-72 in a non-conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (2-2) shot 58.5 percent from the floor, making 31 of 53 field-goal attempts.
St. Norbert got off to a hot start, making six of its first eight shots to build an early 15-7 lead. The Green Knights led 21-16 with 11:35 left in the first half and then went over six minutes without a field goal, as the Yellowjackets build a pair of 10-point leads, the last at 34-24 with 5:33 left.
Michael Payant's 3-pointer broke the dry spell and ignited a 9-0 run capped off by a Jamison Nikolai dunk to cut it to 34-33 with 2:52 left before halftime. The Green Knights would cap off an 18-5 run to close the half on
Carter Gebler's 3-pointer just before halftime for a 42-39 advantage.
The Green Knights never trailed in the second half, with another Gebler 3 snapping a 44-44 tie early in the period. St. Norbert pushed ahead 62-50 with 11:25 to go on a pair of
Garrett Grzesk free throws. Superior would get its deficit down to six points on two occasions, but St. Norbert would get the next points each time and would hold off the visitors from the Twin Ports down the stretch.
Grzesk registered a career-high 17 points, while
Kyle Krueger added a career-high 15 points. Nickolai finished with 14 points, while Gebler totaled 13. St. Norbert outrebounded the Yellowjackets 36-25.
Superior shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the floor, just was just 13-for-32 (40.6 percent) in the second half. J'Vaun Walker and Reid Johnson each had 19 points to lead the Yellowjackets.
