PLYMOUTH - St. Norbert College, making its first trip to longtime rival Lakeland University in 28 years, found the setting to its liking with a convincing 95-56 triumph in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Green Knights (3-2, 2-0 NACC), who faced the Muskies on a virtually annual basis until joining the Midwest Conference in 1983, had not played at Lakeland since November 28, 1994. St. Norbert improved to 67-32 all-time against Lakeland, now the most wins for the Green Knights against any opponent after snapping a tie with Lawrence University at 66. St. Norbert also held Lakeland 38 points under its season scoring average of 94 points per game coming into the contest.
St. Norbert trailed for most of the first 10 minutes of the game, with Lakeland holding an 11-5 lead just over five minutes in and a 19-15 lead nearly nine minutes into the contest. An
Aidan Harrington 3-pointer put St. Norbert ahead 20-19 with 9:48 left in the first half. The Muskies would trail 22-21 with 8:39 to go, but a 17-0 run by the Green Knights over the next 4:50 ballooned the advantage to 39-21.
Connor Beauchamp started the run with a pair of baskets, followed by a
Garrett Grzesk 3-pointer. Beauchamp connected again and Grzesk drained another trey for a 34-21 lead at the 5:50 mark.
Carter Gebler tipped in his own miss and
Jamison Nickolai connected on a 3-pointer for a 39-21 lead with 3:49 to go.
Michael Payant's shot just before the buzzer put St. Norbert ahead 45-25 at the rest stop.
Lakeland would get to within 47-29 early in the second half, but a 13-1 run by St. Norbert pushed the Green Knights' lead to 60-30 with 15:30 left and took the mystery out of the result. Payant,
Evan Glaser,
Kyle Krueger, Grzesk, Payant again with a basket and 3-pointer fueled the run.
St. Norbert, which had 13 players crack the scoring column, shot 53.5 percent (38-for-71) from the floor and was a lusty 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Green Knights also held a commanding 49-25 rebounding advantage, with 16 offensive rebounds leading to 23 second-chance points. Payant and Nickolai led St. Norbert with 15 points apiece. Glaser,
Carter Gebler and
Will Dehn all had nine points each.
Lakeland shot 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the floor and was 9-for-34 (26.5 percent) from distance. Travis Kohlmann had a team-high 14 points, while Caleb Fuller added 13 points.
