MEQUON - St. Norbert College picked up a pivotal road victory with a 74-64 win over Concordia University Wisconsin in a matchup of two defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tri-champions at Buuck Fieldhouse.
St. Norbert (1-2, 1-0 NACC) trailed for most of the first half, falling behind 26-16 at the 8:28 mark and 31-19 with 6:19 left. The Green Knights halved their deficit on their next two possessions after 3-pointers by
Garrett Grzesk and
Aidan Harrington. St. Norbert continued on its 11-0 run on a conventional three-point play and a fast break layup by Harrington to trail 31-30 with 3:21 left.
Harrington canned a 3-pointer to tie the game at 35-35 with 23 seconds left before halftime, but Concordia got a 3-pointer just before halftime to lead 38-35 at intermission.
St. Norbert took its first lead since the game's opening moments when
Carter Gebler drained a 3-pointer with 16:01 left for a 44-43 lead.
Michael Payant had a conventional three-point play to put St. Norbert up 50-45 with 14:04 left. The Falcons got back to within 54-52 with 10:29 to go, but St. Norbert went on a 13-6 run over the next 3:39 to lead 67-58 on another Harrington trey. Concordia trailed 67-64 with 2:02 to go, but Payant's open 3 with 1:05 to go was buried for a 70-64 lead and effectively decided the outcome.
St. Norbert shot 47.5 percent from the floor, making 28 of 59 field-goal attempts. All five starters were in double figures, with Payant and
Evan Glaser each scoring 14 points. Harrington finished with 13 points, while Gebler and
Kyle Krueger had 10 points apiece.
Concordia shot 40.7 percent from the floor, making 24 of 59 field-goal attempts, but was just 10-for-30 (33.3 percent) in the second half. Grant Karsten and Freeman Jackson led the Falcons with 15 points apiece.
