Coghlin Sets NCAA Division III Wins Record

DE PERE - St. Norbert College coach Tim Coghlin set the NCAA Division III record for men's hockey coaching victories at that level with the Green Knights' 3-1 win over Finlandia University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Cornerstone Community Center.

Coghlin, who has been at the helm of the Green Knights since the 1993-94 season, recorded his 625th win. The triumph passed Bob Emery atop the list, who had 624 wins at Plattsburgh State University from 1989 to 2019. Coghlin's win total is also the third-most all-time in all divisions for coaches who have coached exclusively at one school, trailing only Jack Parker (894 wins at Boston University from 1974 to 2013) and Red Berenson (848 wins at Michigan from 1985 to 2017). Coghlin's win total is also 11th-most all-time in all divisions of college hockey.

St. Norbert took a while to get on the scoreboard against Finlandia, with Adam Stacho finally breaking the ice with a power-play goal at 10:49 of the second period. The Green Knights doubled their lead at 14:15 of the period on a Ben Schmidling marker. St. Norbert had six power-play opportunities in the second period, outshooting the Lions 20-2 in the middle 20 minutes.

Liam Fraser added a power-play goal at 1:58 of the third period for a 3-0 lead. Finlandia would ruin the shutout bid with an extra-attacker, power-play goal by Max Messier at 19:22 of the third period.

Fraser had an assist to go with his goal for a two-point game. Michael McChesney finished with two assists.

St. Norbert outshot Finlandia 42-13. Johnny Roberts made 12 stops for the Green Knights, while Dakota Meyer made 39 saves for the Lions.

St. Norbert was 2-for-7 on the power play, while Finlandia was 1-for-6.
