DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play with a 3-2 win over Lawrence University in the first game of a home-and-home series at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights converted a pair of power-play goals to get the win, including the first goal of the game when
Michael McChesney scored at 14:32 of the first period. Lawrence's Akhmed Malsagov countered at 15:28, but McChesney reached the scoresheet again with another power-play goal at 17:48 of the first period.
Following a scoreless second period that saw St. Norbert come up empty on a five-minute power play, the Green Knights got some breathing room when
T.J. Koufis scored his first collegiate goal at 6:44 of the third period. That goal would prove valuable when Lawrence's Kyle Gierman scored a 6-on-4 extra-attacker, power-play goal at 18:03.
In addition to McChesney's two-point game with his two goals,
Adam Szubert and
Brendan Aird each had two assists for two points.
Lawrence outshot St. Norbert 28-26, including 13-7 in the third period.
Johnny Roberts made 26 saves for the Green Knights, while Brian Tallieau made 23 stops for the Vikings.
St. Norbert was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Lawrence was 1-for-4.
