FOND DU LAC - St. Norbert College built a two-goal lead and then held off a late Marian University rally to claim a 2-1 win in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Blue Line Family Ice Center.
The Green Knights (15-3, 11-0 NCHA), ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, extended their winning streak to 14 games, their longest since a 14-game streak during the 2018-19 season. Marian (6-8-3, 1-7-2) will travel to St. Norbert at 7 p.m. Saturday for the second game of the home-and-home series.
St. Norbert had a pair of early power-play chances come up empty but its third opportunity in the first period resulted in a goal, with
Brendan Mark scoring his third goal of the year when he scored at 19:06.
Brendan Aird and
Tim Nicksic were credited with assists.
Brock Baker cashed in St. Norbert's next power-play chance with a goal at 5:54 of the second period, his eighth of the year. Nicksic and Mark assisted.
Those two goals would hold up nearly the rest of the game, despite St. Norbert having to kill off three third-period penalties. The Sabres didn't get on the scoreboard until Ty Mosimann scored off a rebound for an extra-attacker goal with 26 seconds remaining. The Sabresn had 16 more seconds of extra-attacker time while trailing by one, but couldn't draw even.
St. Norbert outshot Marian 31-24, including 16-9 in the third period.
Johnny Roberts made 23 saves for the Green Knights, while Colby Muise turned away 29 shots for the Sabres.
St. Norbert was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Marian was 0-for-4.
