
PLYMOUTH - St. Norbert College committed six first-half turnovers and couldn't recover in a 40-8 loss to Lakeland University in the Green Knights' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference gridiron debut at Taylor Field.
Lakeland (4-0, 2-0 NACC) took control on the fourth play from scrimmage when Charl'Tez Nunnery connected with Mason Prunick on a 91-yard touchdown pass just 1 minute 41 seconds into the game. St. Norbert would lose fumbles on its first two possessions and Lakeland would score on a Larry Rivers 2-yard touchdown run with 8:26 left in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.
St. Norbert (1-2, 0-1) would lose two fumbles - one returned for a 50-yard touchdown - and throw two interceptions in the second quarter as Lakeland built a 33-0 halftime lead.
The Muskies would score a touchdown in the third quarter, and St. Norbert would get its only touchdown 31 seconds into the fourth quarter when
Charlie Hietpas scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. Hietpas would add a two-point conversion on a run.
Lakeland outgained St. Norbert 484-254 in total offense and committed just two turnovers to the Green Knights' eight overall. The game was marred by 28 penalties, with 22 accepted against Lakeland for 184 yards.
Ben Kohl led St. Norbert on the ground with 47 yards rushing on 11 carries, while
Chris McCartney added 46 yards on 12 carries. Kohl completed 12 of 26 passes for 54 yards.
Dylan Leschewski had five receptions for 19 yards.
Nunnery led Lakeland completed 21 of 33 passes for 309 yards with four touchdowns and added 46 yards rushing. Rivers rushed 24 times for 143 yards, while Brice Kensey caught 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Prunick caught three passes for 137 ayrds and two touchdowns.
St. Norbert sacked Nunnery six times, with
Bryan Boockmeier getting two and
Mitch McCabe 1 1/2.
Maccabee Barrett led the Green Knights with 13 total tackles.
