Late Rally Gives St. Norbert Split With Lake Forest

St. Norbert SoftballDE PERE - St. Norbert College scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opening game of a Midwest Conference North Division doubleheader 3-2 over Lake Forest College at Miron Construction Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex. The Foresters would win the nightcap 14-5.

St. Norbert (9-7, 4-2 MWC North) trailed Lake Forest 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning in the opener. Carmen Yost singled to open the inning and advanced to second when the Foresters' center fielder overran the ball. Following a foul out, Abby Primus hit a towering drive over the right fielder's head which easily scored Yost to tie the game. As Primus slid into third base with a triple, the relay throw sailed into foul territory, allowing her to scamper home and beat the throw to score the game-winning run.

Lake Forest scored an unearned run in the second inning, and that run held up until St. Norbert tied the game in the fifth inning on a Primus double that scored Allison Knop, who had singled. The Foresters then got a two-out hit in the top of the seventh to briefly take the lead.

St. Norbert had nine hits in the game, with Primus going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Knop was 2-for-4.

Ellie Olsen earned the complete-game win by allowing one earned run on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, St. Norbert couldn't slow down a Lake Forest offense that pounded out 18 hits. The Foresters scored three runs in the second inning before St. Norbert answered with five runs in its half of the frame. Two runs would score on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, followed by RBI single from Knop. Kayla Bahr then had a run-scoring single with another run coming around to score after an outfield misplay for a 5-3 lead.

The Foresters would respond with two runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning, and six runs in the sixth inning.

St. Norbert had five hits in the nightcap, all singles. Emma Wiese took the loss in 3 1/3 innings pitched of relief.
