Green Knights Top Lawrence to Win Fifth Straight

APPLETON - St. Norbert College put together two big quarters en route to a 65-52 win over Lawrence University in a non-conference game at Alexander Gym.

The Green Knights (7-4) won their fifth-straight game with the victory and are now idle until Jan. 4, when they travel to Madison to face Edgewood College.

St. Norbert trailed 15-8 after the first quarter, but outscored the Vikings 23-9 in the second quarter and 21-9 in the third quarter to take control.

Lawrence (5-6) led 20-14 with 6:49 left in the second quarter before the Green Knights went on a 17-4 run to close out the period. Kaycee Gierczak had eight points during the run, including a layup at the 3:29 mark to give St. Norbert a 23-22 lead. Emma Morrisey, Chloe Gruszynski and Gierczak followed with hoops for a 29-22 edge with 1:08 left. Jessica Boerner's putback with 34 seconds left before halftime gave St. Norbert a 31-24 edge at intermission.

The Vikings would trim the deficit to 32-30 with 7:30 left int he third quarter, but St. Norbert pulled away behind a 13-0 run. Gierczak had six straight points during the run, the last of which gave St. Norbert a 40-30 lead with 5:19 left. Morrisey's steal and layup then gave St. Norbert a 45-30 lead with 2:40 left. Lawrence scored to snap the drought but Casey Jepson's 3-pointer gave St. Norbert a 48-32 lead with 2:12 left. The Green Knights led 52-33 after three quarters.

The Green Knights held three separate leads of 21 points in the fourth quarter.

St. Norbert shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers. Gierczak was the only Green Knight to reach double figures, posting 18 points. Olivia DeCleene added eight points, while Morrisey, Boerner and Gruszaynski all had seven points apiece.

Lawrence shot 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the floor and committed 20 turnovers. Kenya Earl led the Vikings with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Maggie Culver added 13 points.
