Olivia DeCleene's two pressure-packed free throws with just 0.7 seconds remaining led St. Norbert College to a tight 48-47 win over Benedictine University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (8-4, 5-0 NACC) remained unbeaten in conference play and kept pace with Wisconsin Lutheran College atop the league standings. Benedictine (6-7, 4-2) fell two games behind St. Norbert in the loss column. St. Norbert travels to Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday.
St. Norbert led 46-45 until Benedictine's Alex Fanning hit a layup for a one-point lead with 2 minutes to go. The Green Knights had a pair of turnovers and a missed shot on their next three possessions, but also got three stops of Benedictine. The Eagles had a turnover, a missed field goal and two missed free throws with 15 seconds left. Benedictine had a foul to give and took it with 4.6 seconds left. DeCleene took the inbound pass and drove up the left side, with her floater just rimming out despite being fouled by Benedictine's Brilan McCory. DeCleene's two charity tosses were pure, with Benedictine taking a timeout to advance the ball into the frontcourt. Fanning's mid-range jumper as time expired was well short.
St. Norbert led 8-3 after the first period, which was scoreless for the first 5 1/2 minutes. The Green Knights then built a 17-6 lead after a
Chloe Gruszynski conventional three-point play with 5:16 left. The Eagles cut the deficit down to four three times, but
Kaycee Gierczak's hoop with 21 seconds left sent St. Norbert into halftime with a 25-19 lead.
The Green Knights led 31-19 with 8:49 left in the third quarter before Benedictine closed the period on a 12-2 run to knot the score at 33-33 at the end of the quarter. St. Norbert opened the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run to lead 44-37 with 5:06 left after a
Jessica Boerner jumper. The Eagles then went on an 8-0 run to take a 45-44 lead with 3:01 to go on a Britney Pitzer 3-pointer.
St. Norbert shot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the floor. Gierczak led St. Norbert with 14 points, while Boerner added 12 points. Both players had seven rebounds.
Benedictine shot 38.8 percent (19-for-49) from the floor. Fanning led the Eaglies with 16 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots, while Pitzer added 12 points.
