DE PERE - St. Norbert College couldn't bounce back from a big Elmhurst University run midway through the first half in a 70-55 loss in a non-conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.
The Green Knights (2-1) trailed the Bluejays, ranked No. 10 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, 18-15 with 9:26 left in the first half after a
Michael Payant steal and layup. Elmhurst (4-0) quickly responded with a 17-3 run over the next 4:30 to take a 35-18 edge with 4:56 to go before halftime. Elmhurst settled on a 43-26 halftime lead.
St. Norbert would scratch back into the game, with a 13-3 run getting St. Norbert to within 51-41 on a
Josh Nicklaus layup with 11:51 remaining, but the Green Knights would get no closer.
The Green Knights shot 38.2 percent for the game, making 21 of 55 field-goal attempts.
Nick Smoldt led St. Norbert with nine points, while
Ben Jelacic and
Jack Pettit had eight points apiece. St. Norbert committed 17 turnovers and was outrebounded 41-35.
Elmhurst shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the floor and wa 10-for-25 (40 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Ocean Johnson led the Bluejays with 16 points, while Jay Militello added 15 points. Jake Rhode just missed a triple double with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
