EAU CLAIRE - St. Norbert College shot 54 percent from the floor in the second half to erase a six-point halftime deficit and top UW-Eau Claire 60-55 in a non-conference battle at Zorn Arena.
St. Norbert (3-1) trailed 28-22 at halftime after a frigid first 20 minutes that saw the Green Knights made just 8 of 25 (32 percent) of their field-goal attempts and only 4 of 12 (33.3 percent) of their free-throw attempts. St. Norbert connected on 15 of 28 (53.6 percent) of its field-goal attempts and was 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) at the free-throw line in the second half.
Eau Claire (4-2) was able to build a 21-11 lead after Michael Casper's bucket with 5:37 left in the first half. St. Norbert eventually whittled the deficit down to four points at 24-20 with 1:07 left on a
Jacob Bolwerk basket before eventually settling on a 28-22 deficit at halftime.
The Green Knights hung around in the first part of the second half, getting to within two points twice, but Eau Claire would score on its next possession both times to go back up by four. But St. Norbert would hold Eau Claire without a field goal for a 6-minute, 35-second stretch to slowly swing momentum in its favor. Bolwerk's jumper with 7:19 left put St. Norbert up 46-43. Eau Claire wouldn't go away quietly, going on a 10-2 run to take a 53-48 lead with 4:43 to go.
St. Norbert came again, with
Nick Smoldt canning a 3-pointer and Bolwerk knocking down another bucket to tie the game at 53-53 with 3:32 left.
Michael Payant then converted a turnover into a lead with a layup with 2:57 left. St. Norbert got another defensive stop and
Ben Jelacic made a pair of free throws for a 57-53 edge with 2:35 left. The Green Knights' defense took over from there, not yielding a field goal the rest of the way. Inside the final minute and nursing a one-possession lead, St. Norbert forced an Eau Claire turnover and two Blugold misses from the floor.
Carson Talbert's two free throws with two seconds left sealted the win for St. Norbert, its first at Zorn Arena since Dec. 13, 2014.
The Green Knights finished 23 of 53 (43.4 percent) from the floor for the game and outrebounded the Blugolds 42-37. Bolwerk had a game-high 17 points and added six rebounds. Talbert finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Smoldt keyed the effort off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds.
Eau Claire shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the floor and was 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) at the free-throw line. David Ijadimbola led the Blugolds wiht 15 points, while Brock Voigt added 10 points.
