Green Knights Pull Away to Win NCHA Opener

DE PERE - St. Norbert College scored three goals in the last six minutes of the second period to pull away and defeat Lawrence University 6-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener for both teams at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights and Vikings were tied 2-2 before Jordan Strand snapped the tie with a maker at 14:32 of the second period. St. Norbert took advantage of a pair of power-play opportunities late in the period, with Brock Baker converting on both chances at 17:36 and 19:24 for a 5-2 lead.

Lawrence started the third period on a five-minute power play but a sound St. Norbert penalty killing unit kept the Vikings off the scoreboard. St. Norbert salted the game away with a Tim Nicksic goal at 12:07.

St. Norbert led 1-0 after the first period after Strand's power-play goal at 10:31 of the frame. The Green Knights doubled their lead early in the second period when Liam Fraser scored at 1:17. Lawrence would respond with a power-play goal from Matt Meininger at 4:27 and a score by Ivan Galaguzov at 7:53.

Besides Baker and Strand's multi-point games, Nicksic and Fraser each had an assist for two-point games. Peter Bates and Adam Stacho had two assists apiece.

The Green Knights outshot Lawrence 41-23, including a 25-13 margin in the final two periods. St. Norbert was 3-for-7 on the power play, while Lawrence was 1-for-4.

Johnny Roberts made 21 saves for St. Norbert, while Alex Mosquera made 29 stops in just over 52 mnutes of work for the Vikings. Kyle McNair made six stops in relief of Mosquera.
