Thompson's Two Goals Powers St. Norbert Past St. Olaf

DE PERE - St. Norbert College got a pair of second-half goals from sophomore Abby Thompson en route to a 2-0 win over St. Olaf College in a non-conference match at Schneider Stadium.

With the win, the Green Knights (8-7-1) picked up their first women's soccer win over a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe since 1998. St. Norbert is now 4-1 in its last five matches.

The two teams played evenly and were scoreless heading into halftime. Neither team had generated any quality scoring opportunities until Thompson broke loose on a clean run in the 69th minute. Amelia Carlson was fouled but there was no whistle with St. Norbert holding an advantage, and her pass went ahead. Thompson went on a clean run and beat St. Olaf goalkeeper Grace Sprangers at 68:10.

Thompson picked up an insurance goal at 74:15 when she got a turnover in the St. Olaf end and battled through three Ole defenders to finish just inside the left post for her ninth goal of the season.

St. Olaf applied strong pressure in the final 10 minutes but couldn't get on the scoresheet.

The Oles outshot St. Norbert 14-10 and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. St. Norbert had nine fouls to St. Olaf's eight.

Lilly Collins made six saves in recording her second consecutive shutout. Sprangers made four stops for the Oles.
