DE PERE - St. Norbert College saw its season wind down with losses of 10-7 and 13-2 to Edgewood University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Miron Construction Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
Elly Kirst (pictured) scored three runs in the doubleheader, giving her 46 during a banner freshman season. Her total surpassed the previous single-season record for runs scored of 45, set by Steph Brunette in 2011.
In the opener, the Green Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
Grendel Sprong doubled home Kirst and
Allison Ardito's sacrifice fly broughtaround Sprong. That lead held up until the Eagles scored eight times on eight hits in the fourth inning. Edgewood added to its lead with a run in the fifth inning. St. Norbert got a run back in the fifth when Ardito's bunt single scored Kirst and
Ava Engwall's fielder's choice scored
Morgan Jarvi to cut it to 9-4. Edgewood scored once in the sixth inning. The Green Knights got the run back in the bottom of the sixth when Kirst doubled in
Molly Reichenberger. St. Norbert scored its last two runs when
Zoe Zasada's two-run pinch-hit double scored Engwall and Sophie Nieckula.
Kirst was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in, while Engwall was 3-for-4.
Karleigh Linssen was 2-for-4, while Ardito added two runs batted in.
Amber Johanek took the loss in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
In the nightcap, Edgewood scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take control. The Green Knights got a run when Engwall's sacrifice fly scored Ardito in the bottom of the second and added another when Sprong's infield single scored Kirst with a record-setting run. The Eagles put the game away with two runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth inning.
The Green Knights finished with three hits in Game 2.
