DE PERE – St. Norbert College fought Dominican University to a split on senior day, winning the first game on a Ethan Volz walk-off home run before falling 4-0 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Van Alstine Field.
The Green Knights (17-18, 7-13 NACC) led for most of the first game before the Stars tied the contest 3-3 in the ninth before Volz recorded his second game-winning hit of the week, hitting a two RBI home run.
Jake Lucas gave St. Norbert the lead in the first inning, with Will Debruin scoring after a Dominican error after Lucas's single. The Green Knights doubled their lead in the inning with a Declan Kane single scoring Lucas. Zach Bostrand made it 3-0 in the second after scoring on a wild pitch, but the Green Knights found no more runs till the ninth.
The Stars scored twice in the eighth, including a walk with the bases loaded. Dominican once again found the bases loaded in the ninth and tied the game 3-3, which was quickly erased in the bottom of the inning thanks to another important hit from Volz.
Lucas and Connor LaBar each had two hits. Zac Wotruba earned his third win of the season, pitching the final inning. Senior Jace Midbon (pictured) started in one of his final regular season games as a Green Knight, throwing an efficient eight innings while striking out five and allowing two runs on four hits, not surrendering a hit until the fifth.
In the nightcap, the Green Knights were held scoreless by the Stars, with Dominican scoring all four runs in the third inning.
Lucas and Carson Krumrei each had two hits. Charlie Gretz took the loss, pitching six innings while striking out three and allowing four runs on seven hits.
