DE PERE – St. Norbert College split with league-leading Milwaukee School of Engineering, claiming victory near the end of the second game in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Van Alstine Field.
The Green Knights (16-17, 6-12 NACC) were tied 8-8 in the eighth until a Ethan Volz (pictured) single scored Declan Kane to pick up a pivotal win in conference play with only six games remaining in the regular season.
The Raiders built up a 7-0 lead after two innings in the opening game, with a Will DeBruin RBI single putting the Green Knights on the scoreboard in the fifth. St. Norbert cut into the lead further in the eighth, as singles from Zach Bostrand and Tyler Dean each scored one run. Dean scored a third run in the inning to make it 7-4. MSOE scored one run in the ninth to make it 8-4, which proved to be enough in game one.
DeBruin, Volz, Bostrand and Lucas all had two hits.
Jason Schroeder took the loss, pitching one inning and allowing seven runs on seven hits.
In the nightcap, MSOE once again drew first blood and led 3-0 after one inning. A Connor LaBar 2 RBI home run made it 3-2 in the second, with the junior also giving the Green Knights a 4-3 lead in the third with a two-run single. Dean's double scored Lucas in the fourth to make it 5-3 but the Raiders responded with four runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 advantage.
LaBar hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth make it a 7-7 game. The tie was short lived as the Raiders scored on an error the following inning. Carson Krumrei brought home Dean in the eighth to tie the game once again, eventually leading to Volz's crucial RBI.
LaBar finished the game going 3-for-4 with six RBIs. Dean also recorded three hits.
Kyle Olson earned his second win of the season, pitching the final two innings while striking out one and allowing no hits or runs.
