DE PERE - St. Norbert College rebounded from a two-goal deficit to give head coach
Tim Coghlin his 700th career win as the Green Knights posted a 5-2 victory over Lawrence University in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The victory made Coghlin (pictured) only the ninth coach in NCAA history in all divisions to pilot a men's hockey team to 700 wins and is the only one to do it entirely at the Division III level. In his 32nd season with the Green Knights, Coghlin holds a 700-192-63 record.
It looked for a while like the milestone achievement may have to wait after the Green Knights trailed 2-0 after a somnolent first period that saw the Vikings score a power-play goal by Cody Brekke at 14:29 and then net a shorthanded marker by Roman Cherniak just 55 seconds later. Lawrence outshot St. Norbert 9-7 in the first 20 minutes of action.
That turned in a big way in the second period, as St. Norbert unleashed a fusillade of shots to outshoot Lawrence 24-0 the first 10 1/2 minutes of the stanza. St. Norbert got on the board when
Ethan Byrne scored 2:42 into the frame and then tied things up when
Braydon Beahm scored his 13th goal of the season by netting a power-play marker at 4:55.
Calvin Hanson's goal at 12:59 of the period pushed St. Norbert ahead to stay. St. Norbert outshot Lawrence by a whopping 31-6 margin in the second period.
T.J. Koufis capped a memorable Senior Night by scoring a pair of third-period goals, puffing the net at 5:33 and 8:47.
Ryan Gingher had three assists for three points. In addition to Koufis' two-point game, Hanson added an assist for a two-point night.
Logan Dombrowsky and
Curtis Hammond each had two assists for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Lawrence 51-19.
Hunter Garvey made 17 saves for the Green Knights.
The Green Knights were 1-for-7 on the power play, while Lawrence was 1-for-4. St. Norbert put 20 shots on goal on its seven power-play chances.
