Field Position Dooms Green Knights

STEVENS POINT - St. Norbert College couldn't overcome the field-position battle en route to a 41-17 loss to UW-Stevens Point in a non-conference game at Goerke Field.

The Pointers converted all four of their possessions that started in St. Norbert territory into touchdowns, the difference in a game that saw Stevens Point hold just a 327-260 advantage in total offense.

The Green Knights needed just seven plays to traverse 39 yards, scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Michael Meneguzzo to Bailey Turenne (pictured) with 8:38 left in the quarter. Stevens Point would tie things up at 7-7 after it recovered a muffed punt at the St. Norbert 6, scoring three plays later on a 2-yard run by Brycen Cashin.

Stevens Point took over at the St. Norbert 46 early in the second quarter, scoring on its first play of the series on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Smith to Ben Wollersheim. The Green Knights countered with a 41-yard field goal by Tyler Juergensen at the 10:34 mark to cut it to 14-10, but Cashin would return the ensuring kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 edge. The Green Knights got to within 21-17 after they capped off a 70-yard drive on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Meneguzzo to Neville Roberts with 1:15 left before halftime. Cashin struck again on the kickoff return, with a 66-yard jaunt setting the Pointers up at the St. Norbert 26. Smith then found Matt Getgen on a 26-yard touchdown pass and a 28-17 lead with 58 seconds left before halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Stevens Point salted the game away with a 1-yard touchdown run by Reed Smith and a 9-yard rushing score by Lucas Milz in the fourth quarter.
