DE PERE – St. Norbert College battled with Marian University in two close games in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Van Alstine Field, but fell 7-5 and 7-4 to the Sabres.
The Green Knights (6-16, 1-9 NACC) fought back from deficits several times during the afternoon, including tying the second game at 4-4 after trailing by four runs in the fourth before the Sabres took a late win with three runs in the final two innings.
In the opening game, St. Norbert took a 1-0 lead off a Dawson Schmidt double to score Devin Geary in the first inning. After five runs from Marian, the Green Knights got back on the scoreboard in the fifth, with a Trevor Reinhardt (pictured) triple scoring A.J. Kisting and a RBI single from Schmidt to make it 5-3.
Trailing 7-3 in the seventh, Schmidt hit his third RBI of the game to score Reinhardt to make it 7-4. Reinhardt got one more run back in the ninth off a solo home run, but the Green Knights couldn't find any more runs as their rally was stopped with a 7-5 Sabres win.
Reinhardt nearly went for the cycle in the loss, going 3-for-5 at the plate with one double, triple and home run with two RBIs. Schmidt also recorded three hits, with all of them bringing home a runner. Luke Steebs took the loss, pitching four innings.
After trailing by four runs in the fifth inning in the second game, St. Norbert tied the game at 4-4 with four runs on five hits. Schmidt brought home Reinahrdt on an RBI double to start the rally, while a 2 RBI home run by Patrick Daniels made it 4-3. A Matt Perry single tied the game when Jake Lucas was brought home.
Despite this effort, two runs in the ninth doomed St. Norbert as the Sabres took the sweep with a 7-4 victory.
Daniels, Lucas, Perry and Kisting each had two hits. Dylan Heier took the loss, pitching two third of an inning and allowing two hits and one run.
