Harris Cup Stays In De Pere With Title Game Win

DE PERE - St. Norbert College repeated as Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs champions with a 7-4 win over Adrian College in the title game at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (23-5-1), ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, clinched their 22nd NCAA Division III Tournament berth with the win. St. Norbert will find out its draw when the NCAA announces the 14-team bracket at 9 a.m. Monday. The win was St. Norbert's 17th NCHA Playoffs title, when including both versions of the NCHA.

Both teams felt each other out in a tightly fought defensive battle in the first period, with Adrian breaking through late in the frame on a goal by Bradley Somers with 55 seconds left for a 1-0 lead to take into first intermission.

St. Norbert didn't waste much time getting the equalizer, when Carter Hottmann's one-timer was good for a power-play goal at the 3:03 mark of the second period. The game would remain 1-1 until the Green Knights swung momentum their way in a grand fashion in the final minute of the period. Calvin Hanson teed up a one-timer from the high slot and puffed the net at 19:33 for a 2-1 lead. The Green Knights then sent the Cornerstone Community Center crowd into a frenzy when Blake Ulve won a faceoff with under 2 seconds left and with the puck going across the middle, Byron Hartley poked it home just before time expired for a 3-1 lead.

The Green Knights looked like they would pull away after building a 5-1 lead following markers from Gustav Portillo and Curstin Hammond at 6:28 and 7:59 of the third period, respectively. Adrian would mount a last-ditch rally on goals from Patrick Saini at 9:14 and Somers at 15:07 to make it 5-3. The Bulldogs then scored an extra-attacker goal on a Saini marker with 2:53 to go. St. Norbert would hold off the late Adrian charge with empty-net goals from Hottmann at 18:03 and Liam Fraser at 19:18.

Hottmann finished with a three-point game, scoring two goals with an assist. Fraser, Hammond and Hartley all had one goal and one assist for two points, while Ulve and Logan Dombrowsky each had two assists for two points.

Hammond was named the Harris Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player, while Dombrowsky, Braden Lindstrom, Adam Szubert and Hunter Garvey were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

St. Norbert outshot Adrian 26-22. Garvey made 18 saves for the Green Knights, while Dershahn Stewart turned away 19 shots for the Bulldogs.

St. Norbert was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Adrian was 0-for-2.
