St. Norbert Advances In NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs

DE PERE - St. Norbert College didn't get a win but the result was enough to advance in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup Playoffs following a 2-2 overtime tie against Concordia University Wisconsin at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (21-5-1) won the best-of-two series over Concordia in the first-to-three points format, with an 8-1 win in Friday's series opener and the tie in Game 2. St. Norbert will host Trine University in a Harris Cup Playoffs semifinal game at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Norbert fell behind early when Concordia's Sawyer Wirsing scored just 4:52 into the game. The Green Knights got the equalizer late in the first period when Curtis Hammond scored his fourth goal of the series by beating a prone Concordia goaltender Gabe Rozek at the 17:49 mark.

The Green Knights went ahead at 14:34 of the second period when a sprawling Braden Lindstrom (pictured) beat Rozek five-hole for a 2-1 lead. That goal would hold up until Concordia's Dain Sardelli tied it up at 10:21 of the third period when he put home a loose puck out front.

The overtime provided plenty of tension, with Concordia needing to win to force a mini-game to decide the series. The Falcons pulled Rozek with 2:19 remaining and held the puck in the offensive zone the rest of the way. St. Norbert held off Concordia, not getting a whistle until 3.3 seconds remained. The draw went to the corner and time expired, preserving the series win.

St. Norbert outshot Concordia 46-25. Hunter Garvey made 23 stops, including several key saves in a 10-stop third period and a four-save overtime session. Rozek finished with 44 stops for the Falcons.

St. Norbert was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Concordia was 0-for-1.
