DE PERE - St. Norbert College got its season off to a winning start with a 3-0 triumph over St. Olaf College to open a two-game non-conference series at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights won their 24th season opener in the last 25 years by outshooting the Oles 30-15, which included holding the visitors without a shot on goal in the first period. It marked just the second time in program history St. Norbert held an opponent without a shot on goal in any period.
St. Norbert pulled ahead by scoring in the game's opening moments, with
Braydon Beahm wasting little time potting his first collegiate goal just 36 seconds into the action for the first period's lone goal.
Logan Dombrowsky then made it 2-0 midway through the second period, puffing the net moments after a St. Norbert power play expired with a goal at 9:07.
St. Norbert made its two-goal lead hold up the rest of the way until
Bryan Gilman tapped in an empty-net goal at 19:08 of the third period.
Hunter Garvey (pictured) turned away 15 shots and led the penalty kill with a clean sheet, thwarting four St. Olaf power-play chances. St. Norbert was 1-for-5 on the power play.
Ryan Nolan made 27 saves for the Oles.
Game 2 of the series will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Community Center.
