DE PERE - St. Norbert College staked a claim to being a contender in the 2024 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference championship race with a hard-fought 4-3 win over league pre-season favorite Concordia University Wisconsin at Green Bay Tennis Center.
The Green Knights (2-0, 2-0 NACC) snapped the two-time defending NACC champion Falcons' 22-match winning streak against NACC opponents (regular season and tournament) with the win. St. Norbert had not won a singles or doubles match against Concordia since joining the NACC in 2021-22.
St. Norbert got off to a hot start, sweeping all three matches to gain the doubles point.
Allison Unverzagt (pictured) and
Grace Peters won a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles over Morgan Chyla and Peyton Morgan 7-6 (7-0).
Mayghan Bongle and
Anna Vechart topped Abby Schwartz and Payton Steward 6-3 at No. 2, while
Jordan Domnick and
Alyssa Tegen defeated Ruth Dolde and Jeanie Eisen 6-3 at No. 3.
The Green Knights then held off a late Concordia charge to split the singles matches and earn the dual win. Unverzagt fashioned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chyla at No. 2, while Peters handed Steward a 6-1, 6-1 defeat at No. 3. Three matches then went to a third set, with Domnick pulling out a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 win over Morgan at No. 1 singles to clinch the team decision.
St. Norbert travels Saturday to Chicago to face Illinois Institute of Technology in another key NACC dual match.
