DE PERE - St. Norbert College had its 2024 softball season end on a high note after splitting a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Edgewood College, dropping the opener 10-5 before taking the nightcap 9-4 in front of a raucous home crowd at Miron Construction Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.
The Green Knights got off to a quick start in the nightcap, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits. St. Norbert loaded the bases with nobody out and
Karleigh Linssen roped a single to drive in a pair of runs. Following a groundout to advance the runners,
Meghan Gonnering singled to drive in two more runs and a 4-0 lead.
Edgewood would score single runs in the third and fourth innings to get to within 4-2, but the Green Knights responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits.
Lilly Haase had an RBI single and
Ava Engwall followed with a double to clear the bases for an 8-2 lead.
Christina Paleka then had a run-scoring single for a 9-2 lead. The Eagles would get two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but would get no closer.
Haase was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Engwall was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Paleka was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gonnering was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Cassie Schultz got the complete-game win, scattering nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In the opener, Edgewood jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a run in the first inning and three more in each of the second and third innings. The Green Knights got a run in their half of the third inning on an Engwall sacrifice fly. Edgewood would score three runs in the top of the seventh before St. Norbert plated four runs in the seventh. Engwall had an RBI groundout,
Addison Race a two-run double and Haase had an RBI single.
Meredith Manke was 2-for-2, while Gonnering was 2-for-3. Haase added a 2-for-4 performance, while Paleka drew four walks.
