DE PERE - St. Norbert College hosted Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader, splitting a pair of one-run games with a 1-0 win and 8-7 loss at Miron Construction Field.
The Green Knights took the opener thanks to a complete-game win by
Addison Race, who scattered six hits with three walks and three strikeouts to get her second shutout of the season. The Cougars would have at least one baserunner in every inning, but Race would strand nine baserunners to work out of trouble.
St. Norbert scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third inning.
Christina Paleka opened the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second base by
Allison Ardito. Following a popout,
Zoe Zasada singled and Paleka would then score on a Concordia throwing error.
The Green Knights had five hits in the opener, with
Nicole Condon posting a double.
In the nightcap, Concordia would jump ahead with three runs in the top of the first inning. St. Norbert got a run back in its half of the inning when Ardito led off the inning with a triple and scored on Condon's sacrifice fly. The Cougars would take a 4-1 lead in the second inning, but St. Norbert would scratch a run across in the third when
Ava Engwall walked and came around to score on
Kathryn Bergin's RBI double.
The Green Knights would surge ahead 7-4 with a five-run fifth inning.
Lilly Haase's single brought home
Karleigh Linssen, who had doubled with one out.
Andrianna Volz then singled in Haase to cut the deficit to 5-4. Ardito and Condon then drew bases-loaded walks to push St. Norbert ahead 6-4, with
Ava Engwall's RBI single making it 7-4. The Green Knights would leave the bases loaded, which would prove costly when Concordia scored four runs on six hits in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead.
St. Norbert would get a runner to second base in the sixth inning and runners at the corners with two outs in the seventh inning but couldn't push across the tying run.
Engwall was 3-for-4, while Ardito was 2-for-2 and Bergin was 2-for-3.
Amber Johanek was charged with the loss in 3 2/3 innings pitched of relief.
