St. Norbert Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – St. Norbert College gave nationally ranked Plattsburgh State University all it could handle but eventually dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision in the opening game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic at Stafford Ice Arena.

Bridget Orr scored the game-winning goal at 3:31 of overtime to lift the Cardinals (5-1-1), ranked No. 6 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll. The Green Knights (8-1) suffered their first loss of the season and will play in the tournament's consolation game at 1 p.m. CST Sunday.

Both teams skated to a scoreless first period, with the Green Knights having the only power play in the first 20 minutes. Plattsburgh broke through a 11:55 of the second period, when Emily Kasprzak scored shortly after a penalty had expired.

St. Norbert, which had a pair of power-play chances come up empty in the third period, drew even when Natalie Hogan (pictured) scored on a breakaway chance at 15:29. Jo Mahlum assisted.

Plattsburgh outshot St. Norbert 35-23, with the Green Knights having an 8-7 nod in the third period and 4-1 in overtime. St. Norbert was 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Cardinals were 0-for-2.

Keira Markell made 33 saves for the Green Knights, while Chloe Lewis turned away 22 chances for Plattsburgh.
